Subject: A Question or Two

My name is Bobbi and I just recently discovered NAMA this past week! What a wonderful experience it has been too. I am a recovering addict with almost five years as a Methadone Maintenance patient. I was on methadone years ago: I used it, in fact, to clean up for a period of 13 years. If I had only STAYED on the program there probably would never have been a horrendous 8 year relapse that all but killed me, but I’m not here right now to tell my story!I’ve had a fantastic, enlightening and uplifting three day correspondence with Joycelyn over at NAMA! What a wonderful person she is!! I can still hardly credit the fact that she took the time to answer a rather impulsive (and, I’m sure, confusing!) e-mail personally! I intend to become very active in the movement; it is more than time for educating and informing the public about the true potential methadone has to save lives. I am so tired of watching the pain, the misery and the death involved with addiction; it’s so damn senseless. I felt as if I had finally come home after a long and lonely journey as I was reading Joycelyn’s e-mails and the follow-up articles they led me to.
I was wondering if anyone on the Net or acquainted with this group knows anything of a DR. JIM DeWITT? He was a physician out of Gloucester, MA, back in the early ’70’s– an ex-addict himself. He was the first person to ever acquaint me with methadone (though it was called Dolphine back then). He ran a small “clinic” out of his home for addicts and was a fantastic person. I remember him as always looking sad under his large smile – as if he was aware of some painful truth we couldn’t see. I’ve often wondered about him over the years, and talking to NAMA brought him back to mind.
I’ll be in touch again. I don’t really mind too much about the e-mail name; I’ve never been crazy about “hiding”, and I rather think that some time in the not too distant future my name will be seen pretty frequently! I owe a debt for having been gien back my life one last time and I intend to pay it. It’s certainly time for change!
Take care and Happy Holidays!
Bobbi
