I understand why some theme authors get mad and pull their themes, or stop making them available to the public. It’s frustrating when someone rips your content and claims it as their own. I’ve had my artwork stolen plenty of times, I’ve had entire copies of some of my sites stolen — this is not a new concept to me. But it’s still frustrating nonetheless.
I was surfing through my server referral logs and ran across an entry with a neat domain name. I pulled it up and thought “Yep, that’s Jim’s Monkey” … no biggie, I’ve seen plenty of people download and “re-structure” my theme. Most of them leave my name somewhere in the credits — I mean that’s a common courtesy. Or so I thought.
I don’t mind so much that this person ripped off my theme, but she went so far as to edit the code, stylesheet, etc. and removed (almost) all signs of my name and claim of ownership. That annoys me. Not a huge amount, but enough to leave a message on her blog. The very least she could have done was leave the credit in the theme files and re-structure/modify the visual aspects all she liked. I would at least like credit for the work I have done.
A friend of mine told me, “On the ‘net, everyone rips off everyone else … it’s called research.”
Indeed.
Rick
Yeah, I agree with you that that is egregious. I’ve had content ripped off before; I’m not a good enough designer yet so that somebody would actually want to copy my work. :-)
Did you contact the guy that stole your design work?
Nitallica
Aw, Rick, you don’t give yourself enough credit. :)
She didn’t have a contact form, and her domain’s WHOIS details are “anonymized”. I left a comment on the blog and am going send an email to the address I found. I want to give her a chance to respond before stepping things up.
Nitallica
I will say this, she’s all over the ‘net. I’ve uncovered another domain that she owns, plus several freebie blogs, freebie porn sites, a handful of various forum memberships, and several myspace/clone sites — and more personal information than I’d care to know.
She really should cover her tracks better.

This reminds me of something I was going to ask you. I like this theme you have right here. May I use it for what will be my own wordpress blog?
Nitallica
YAY! Another WordPress convert! Welcome to The Dark Side, Jeffie! :D
Of course you may use this, let me know when you’re ready for it, and I’ll clean out my personal crap and give you a clean copy. :)

Heh. Thanks. :) I find that WordPress is a lot saner than some other blogging software (*cough* LJ *cough*) and is much easier for me to figure out.

Ah, thank you so much! Any time you’re ready is okay with me. Lots of time now that I’m back home so I can finally get this going. :)
