Jim and I were in an accident on the way to work this morning. It’s nothing serious, we’re both ok. We were coming off of I-65 in Alabaster and I had stopped, waiting for oncoming traffic to go by so I could merge off of the offramp onto the highway and the guy behind me apparently didn’t see me stop and in turn didn’t stop himself. He was driving a much smaller car, so the damage is mostly to the right and underside of the bumper. There’s a lot of paint from his car and there’s a few deep gashes and some scratching, but no broken lights or anything like that. (which surprised me!) However, I don’t know how easy that thing is to replace so getting it fixed will be interesting, AND I’m not looking forward to being without my car for a few days.
I <3 my car.
I have insurance (I got the Gecko, hehe) and the other guy said he did too. We took each other’s information down. After speaking with the officer, we learned that his insurance card had expired earlier this month, so he got a citation for that. (sucks to be him, but that’s Alabama law … you have to have proof of current insurance) All of this took a little over an hour. We had to wait about 35-40 minutes for a police officer to come take down an accident report, so needless to say we were late for work.
This morning I contacted my insurance company and started a claim. Someone called me back a few minutes ago. Basically, they consider this to be a “no fault” accident.
 WTF?
How they justify that I still don’t get. The accident was clearly the other guy’s fault, and he admitted it to the police officer. The insurance rep told me some spiel about how Alabama is a “no fault state” and since no one was hurt and the damage is minimal that it’s considered to be a no fault accident and that my deductible would come into play.
Just freakin’ GREAT! So what the hell do I pay these guys for!?!?!?
So yeah, my options are: I could pay the deductible and they pay for the repairs and try to get money out of the other guy. If he does have current insurance and they pay, I’d get my deductible back. OR, I could contact the guy’s insurance company myself and deal with them directly to get reimbursed for repairs to my car, etc.
Neither option I like … I would prefer Geico to take care of it for me, but I don’t have 500 bucks laying around. ARGH! Oh well, at least I have time to think about my course of action and decide what I’m going to do. The accident report isn’t due for 2-3 days or so, so at least Jim and I can decide which way to go next week.
Note: it’s not that I don’t think I can deal with handling it myself … that’s a headache I really don’t need right now. And I may decide this weekend that it might be worth spending 500 now to get someone else to deal with it for me (assuming of course that I get it back!).

Damn that sucks. Our luck has been pretty shitty lately hasn’t it?
Nitallica
Well, you could say that … but I prefer to look at it as we’ve been lucky in the sense that things could’ve turned out a lot worse.

A young lad drove into back of me the other week.
My insurance basically fuckt me about and complained for a week. Before his contacted me, said he had admitted fault and that they would repair my car, give me a courtesy car and gaurantee the repairs for 3 years. All I had to do was ring them and arrange time for collection.
So my insurance is getting switched to that company end of the year.
On a better note… My courtesy car is a sports car… fast as hell and sounds amazing.

LOL, sounds like you got a leg up, Benny. :D
My insurance co is ok, and if I could afford higher premiums I wouldn’t have a deductible, but oh well. :P
