The last 3 days have been one long continuous nightmare … early Wednesday our webserver decided to have a meltdown. Jim and I headed over to the colo in Hoover and found that the machine kept bluescreening (a stop 0x00000050 in ntoskrnl.exe, yikes!), then after about 30 minutes wouldn’t power up at all.
A couple of hours and a new powersupply later, yanked it out of the cabinet and brought it home. Two days, 2 harddrives, and a serial ATA raid card later, we find out that one of the harddrives in our mirror RAID array had died … worse news, the data we *could* recover was over 6 months old … and the company had no other means of backup implemented. (we can’t say we didn’t warn them, in fact I begged them at one point to put something, ANYTHING in place!)
EDIT: I forgot to mention that the server hosts not only all of their websites, but the company email too. All of our clients are now down with no means of digital communication nor representation. (Something tells me they’ll listen when we mention “backup” and “disaster recovery” because this was DEFINITELY a disaster!)
When we left work today with a “semi-backup” (all web, no email), we were taking the only working harddrive to a data recovery company, to which the Accounting manager added that we should “get it working, we don’t care what it costs!”
Good news is Jim and I have really racked up the OT this week, bad news is that we won’t get paid for it … bossman is hinting at us taking some time off work instead of getting paid. I was kind of angry about it … for half a second … then realized what was coming up this week.
Hell yeah baybeeeeee! We’ll be taking that time off offer and joining the other geeks at the theater Thursday!
