So remember when I said last week that my laptop tried to eat itself? A day later it succeeded. Thinking it was the battery, I found a replacement on Amazon and treated a family member to lunch in exchange for changing it out for me. (because Heaven forbid Dell assemble their laptops in such a way that batteries are easily replaceable! I was really missing my old ASUS ROGs at that very moment) Poor Quinn made a valiant effort but it seems the power port went out too (and possibly more).
Alas, my Alienware 17-R4 was pining for the fjords.
My new one has been delayed and likely won’t be here until this coming weekend at the earliest, realistically next week. In the meantime, I’ve been loaned an itty bitty Acer (thank you, Fang!) that’s a slight step up from a Chromebook (not that there’s anything wrong with those … it’s just not my baby). This poor little thing is tiny. Doesn’t even have an RJ45 jack. But it has WiFi capability and I can access my online backups to get access to my resumes and use Word online to edit them as best I can until my new baby comes in.
I already have an interview tomorrow, but am not holding my breath. I mean I applied to 18 positions via UAB’s Taleo last night but given how long some of them have been listed, I am not confident those positions will be filled at all, least of all by me. The last time I applied to UAB jobs, I got 2 responses out of about 20, and only one of those resulted in an interview. But I continue onward!
I found a slew of federal jobs that I qualify for, but those require a metric butt-ton of paperwork. So I’ll be working on that for the next few days. I ain’t too proud to take a paycheck from the IRS. :)
Wanna know something really funny though? I was on the fence about my job at SVP. I was growing more and more massively unhappy after each deployment, and by July was feeling burned already. I told myself I would stick it out a year and see if something else pops up there that I could move into. Guess SVP made that decision for me? I will miss my teammates … and Friday lunches with the service desk peeps.
I’m also a bit sad that there will be no roadtrips for a while. I had originally planned this coming Valentine’s Day to see Machine Head and Fear Factory. I just sold my tickets. I was really looking forward to that show, but I keep telling myself there will be others. I know Bloodywood is planning another US tour and I’d love to see Hatebreed again. Maybe with Black Label Society this time? Or maybe I could catch A Killer’s Confession again? Plus, I keep telling myself I’m gonna get out and see some of our local bands too. There’s a Prince coverband that I’ve heard really good things about (Purple Madness I think?) and once I’m jobbed and settled again, I’ll have to start going concerting again.
Also: It’s so freakin’ cold today. Why is it so cold? Mother Nature, I live in the South because I don’t like the cold! The last time I checked we’re in the subtropics, not subarctic. So makey makey with the warm, already!
As my old roommate used to say: oy vey …
