In my previous post, I mentioned that I have transitioned away from Google Reader to Netvibes as my preferred RSS feed reader. One thing that I hadn’t thought of looking into until cleaning out my feeds and updating them was adding Netvibes to the native RSS feed options in Firefox. When you click on the “Subscribe to this page…” RSS button in Firefox, you’re usually prompted with a few default options, like Live Bookmarks, My Yahoo!, etc. Well, I wanted Netvibes to be in that list and found it pretty easy to add with the help of this article and the Developer’s section of the Firefox site pointing me in the right direction.
Yours looks something like that, right? OK, you’ll need to open about:config in a tab in Firefox. Search for “contentHandlers” to make it easy to find the entries to edit.
You’ll need to add 3 new string values
browser.contentHandlers.types.6.title => Netvibes
browser.contentHandlers.types.6.type => application/vnd.mozilla.maybe.feed
browser.contentHandlers.types.6.uri => http://www.netvibes.com/subscribe.php?url=%s
Be sure to replace “6” with the next sequential “browser.contentHandlers.types” number in your settings!
Also, you may or may not already have this record in your settings. If not, you will need to create it:
browser.contentHandlers.auto.application/vnd.mozilla.maybe.feed => http://www.netvibes.com/subscribe.php?url=%s
When finished, close your tab and go about your business adding feeds until your heart’s content. :)
