I’ve had my laptop for about a week now, so far I’ve had little trouble with it. (Of course, bumping up the RAM significantly definitely helped!) I’ve learned my way enough around Vista to find most of what I’ve needed, without bugging Jim too much that is. ;)
I’ve been collecting various Vista-related resources and wanted to share them with you guys in the off chance that someone else out there may be thinking of “taking the plunge.”
- Windows Live Gallery — I’ve recently discovered the sidebar and have been going through this massive directory little by little finding decent utils to add.
- How to Use and Create a Flip 3D Shortcut in Vista — This tutorial tells you how to get back that 3D “flip” shortcut that’s on the quicklaunch bar by default. I accidentally removed mine and found this tut telling you how to get it back, and has links to several other handy-dandy tutorials.
- Changing Windows Explorer’s Default Opening Folder — One of the things I missed from XP was the shortcut to open Windows Explorer and have it open My Computer by default, instead of My Documents. This tutorial helped me fix that little annoyance.
- Restore your Quick Launch ‘Show Desktop’ icon — Yep, guess what else I accidentally removed? hehe, this helpful site contained this easy to understand tutorial and TONS of other helpful Vista info.
- Windows Vista Codec Pack — This helpful tidbit comes courtesy of gHacks, which is a great techie resource in its own right.
- Add Take Ownership Option To Files and Folders Context Menu in Vista — It’s inevitable, at some point you will need to overwrite a file and you’ll get the system “file in use” error. This tutorial can help you take ownership of the file and do what you want to/with it! (NOTE: you will need to register with the forums in order to download files!)
- Logon Studio — This is a freeware app by Stardock (makers of Object Desktop, Window Blinds, etc.) that you can use to make-over the logon screen in Vista. I had loads of fun with this one!! :D
Those are the ones I’ve bookmarked and go back to reference pretty frequently. If you have any Vista-related gems to share, please feel free to do so in the comments below! :)

Last year about this time, I ordered and received this “state of the art” Dell with enough power and memory to run Microsoft. It came with a Vista program (to be installed). Everyone…and I mean EVERYONE I spoke with (and quite a few articles in blogs) had mega problems with Vista, many having to totally remove and reformat their systems. Hearing these many nightmare accounts from folks who know their way around a puter much better than this old Cookie, I opted to just not install it…so to you I say….
Ya got guts lady….

“so to you I say…Ya got guts lady…”
 Thank you, Cookie. ;)

Vista is different…innit? I bought a new desktop in September than runs Vista Home Premium. I couldn’t start it if that was my main work computer…

“Vista is different…innit?”
It’s very pretty overall, and I’m digging the hell out of that.
“I bought a new desktop in September than runs Vista Home Premium. I couldn’t start it if that was my main work computer…”
That’s what I have, Home Premium. I haven’t tried to game in it yet … I’m sure I’ll have to turn a lot of the “pretty” features off in order to get the most out of my games. *shrug*
