Who gets more migraines: Men or women?

Of all the people you know who suffer migraines, are more of them women or men? According to recent research there are more women out there suffering because our brains are quicker on the trigger than men when it comes to getting a migraine started. Yay! Not.

It comes down to new brain imaging techniques that are debunking the old idea that migraines are caused by expanding and contracting blood vessels, and showing instead that excitability seems to be the cause. And women, lucky us, have more excitable brains.

Of course, like any of these studies, the good news is that now researchers have a new direction to take as far as treatment goes — maybe they’ll finally come up with something that works!

Interesting theory … especially since I’ve changed my eating habits (changed my diet altogether in fact!), am exercising more, and am doing all the things my doctor has been bugging me to do for years and I am, in fact, getting more headaches NOW than I have EVER BEFORE! :roll:

So much for clean living, huh? LOL

Lately I blame the heat. I’ve noticed that now if I spend a good deal of time outside, I get the real big temple splitters. I always knew heat was an aggravant, but not a cause. (will remember that from now on!) Maybe this new study will help point researchers in the right direction for an even better understanding of how migraines start and how to prevent them. (would be nice!)

I think what aggravates me most about my headaches is that many of the medicines out there I cannot take, or they do not work for me. There are a lot of drugs currently in development, like this one that’s supposed to help relieve migraine pain for over 24 hours. (that also would be nice!) Unfortunately this treatment won’t be available for over 2 more years.

Yeah, pain relief is nice … but I’m more interested in preventing them altogether.
