I originally meant to type up this rant last night, but I couldn’t be arsed so I think I’ll make an attempt today. Sound ok to you? Good.
Saturday, October 01, 2005 9:21 PM CST, I receive the following bulletin via email from the Fox News website: One student killed in bombing at Oklahoma University during Kansas State-Oklahoma football game. (Watch FOX News Channel or go to http://foxnews.com for more.)
My first thought is “How sad, that poor kid.”
I head over to Google News and look at the news to see if there’s anything else posted. Nothing. I try Yahoo! News. Ditto.
Ok, now I’m curious … there’s been a bombing and NOTHING is being said about it.
Early Sunday I was able to find this story on Fox. I was able to find about the same story on MSNBC. (Both release by the Associated Press, and have probably by now been modified a little.)
I watched Fox News on tv … nothing. I watched the local news early Monday morning … nothing. They’re talking about the explosions in Bali, well that’s something. But what about the one in our own country?
I was listening to the Savage Nation on the radio yesterday afternoon. Savage isn’t normally my cuppa tea. I normally enjoy Boortz a helluva lot more than this yahoo, but at least he had someone filling in so it wasn’t so bad. Actually, my afternoon fave used to be Dixon, but he’s moved to mornings and now his show is more suited towards room-temperature IQs. And for what little it is worth, Savage is better than Frank Matthews any day of the week. (Frankly, Frank, I think you’re a bigot and the only reason you’re on the air is because someone PAYS for you to be!)
But I digress …
I can’t remember the name of the guest host now who was filling in for Savage, but he was talking about the Oklahoma State bombing.
He rattled off the gist of the articles I mentioned above, including that in the apartment of the young man who blew himself up police found an arsenal of bomb-making materials in his apartment. Again nothing new, but he went on to say that Islamic jihad material had also been found as well.
Ok, that hadn’t been mentioned anywhere in any of the generic reports.
In fact, no one had said out loud what had crossed my mind immediately following the “How sad, that poor kid.”
What if this was a terrorist bombing?
News reports were quick to say it was a suicide, the kid was troubled, had depression (I don’t remember reading if it was clinically diagnosed or not).
But who in the hell commits suicide by strapping a bomb to himself and triggering it?
Hello … Can you ‘terrorists’?
Ok, the kid may have been Islamic. The Islamic Society was located near his apartment. And that may have been why it’s not so widely reported. I can understand the media wanting to be sensitive to those of Islamic faith and to prevent outbreaks of any hate crimes that may result thereof … but isn’t this the very same media who wants Abu Graib pictures released regardless of how many American may die as a result?
It seems local papers are covering the story more than the major news networks. I scanned the cable news networks last night: CNN, FOX, MSNBC, … what the Hell is wrong with you people? You have no problem reporting this kind of thing if it happens elsewhere in the world, but won’t show that it is happening HERE!?!?
The kid sat outside a stadium of over 80,000 people … with a bomb strapped to his body. Now tell me that doesn’t sound like a terrorist act to you.
He seemed like a good kid from reading interviews with his family members and former classmates. Why did he do this? Did he have second thoughts while sitting outside the stadium and decided to just take his own life? Did the device go off too early? We might not ever know …
Now I’m left to wonder this: how many kids will blow themselves up before the media (and the rest of America) wakes up and realizes what has happened?
