Had a really fun weekend … I went camping with Jim’s mom and Jessie to Mount Cheaha, the highest peak in Alabama. We left at sunrise Saturday, arriving at Cheaha State Park before lunch. It was early enough that we had plenty of time to set up camp, walk a little bit, and go swimming in the lake. Jessie had a blast using me as a diving board in the lake, LOL. :)
We cooked our own lunch, went swimming again, hunted for firewood, cooked our dinner, then made a fire and burned … I mean, roasted … some marshmallows. Unfortunately, I didn’t put on quite enough sunscreen, as my arms and shoulders now have 3rd degree burns in a couple of places. Mind you, I *did* wear sunscreen, just not enough of it apparently. :P
So Saturday night I chilled out and tried to be as comfy as I could with two crispy twigs for arms, while trying not to get eaten alive by the resident insect population hehe. We received a rude awakening around 3am: rain. Jim’s mom and I covered the tent (which had a meshed top) with a tarp and tried to go back to sleep. We got up around 6 and scurried to get camp picked up before an oncoming storm system hit us.
We made it as far as Anniston before the bottom dropped out. Funny how that seemed like a good time as any to stop for breakfast! :)
We made it to Birmingham around lunchtime and Jim’s mom dropped us off at my house. Jim was working, so I took a nap while Jessie played video games.
My arms are still pretty toasted, and I’ve already got a handful of blisters on my right arm. Unfortunately, I’ve been bitten by something rather nasty on both of my feet. They’ve swollen so that I went to the doctor today to have the bites checked out. (One of them pulsated and “blinked” it was so swollen) They looked like spider bites, but she wasn’t sure and I never actually SAW what bit me.
The doc gave me a steroid ointment and some antibiotics. I’m supposed to let them know in a couple of days if everything’s cool or not. If the bites don’t get better, I’ll need a shot and some stronger meds. *ugh!*
Anyways, so now I hobble a little when I walk and I’ve been wearing long sleeves since Saturday to hide my strawberry-colored arms. Gonna have to get me some 5,000 SPF sunblock someday. :)
